A lot of Nigerian women wear wigs. Wigs are stylish and extremely convenient. With wigs, you can try out different hairstyles without sitting at the salon for hours. Lace wigs are even more fascinating. They look extremely natural; like the hair is growing from your scalp.
Because of the growing popularity of wigs, most Nigerian salons offer wig-making services. However, as the demand for wigs increases, the prices also rise.
If you have a human hair weave, you can make your own wig for less. In this article, you will learn how.
To do this, there are several options. It all depends on how you want the wig to look or what you can afford.
With your human hair weave, make sure the hair is enough to make a full wig. You need a little bit more hair than what you would regularly fix as a weave.
Apart from your weave, you need a wig cap and lace closure to give you the look of a lace wig. If you’d rather not buy a closure, there are ways to make a hair closure yourself.
Wig caps come in two variations, netted or lace. There are two different types of lace caps, French lace and Swiss lace. Just make sure you like how it looks. You can get a wig cap at most stores that sell weaves, or even salons. Now, to make your lace wig:
Try it on and test the tightness. You don’t want it to be too tight or too loose. The perfect fit must be gotten so your wig fits just right. Some wig caps are adjustable.
This step is optional. You can sew a little piece of lace to the part of the cap where the closure is going to be. After sewing, test the fit to make sure it is not too tight on your head or too loose. Make the needed adjustments.
Take your hair closure and secure it on the wig cap at the top of the mannequin head with 3-4 pins. Don’t bother about styling for now. Make sure the hair closure matches your hairline. That is, it isn’t before or behind your hairline. Make sure the closure is placed exactly where and how you want it on your finished wig. You can pack the hair closure up so the sewing process is easy.
Thread your needle and make a knot at the left, middle and right parts of the hair closure, securing the hair closure to the lace cap. Now, make other threading knots, establishing a track. Go around the closure till you have sewed from end to end
Take your longest bundle and pin it to the lace cap starting from the side of the nape, to the other side. Start threading or establishing tracks with your needle and thread from one end to the other end. When you get to the end, make sure you knot the thread multiple times to keep your knots secured.
Fold over or double the hair bundle over and continue threading again to the other side. Remember to use your pins to keep the hair bundle secure on the lace cap. This way your sewing is neat. When you finish with one bundle, start with the next bundle.
You should sew your bundles based on what style you want to achieve, and the style of your closure. After sewing in all the hair bundles, you’re done. Your lace wig is ready to be worn. Brush the weave and make sure it blends with the closure. Since you used human hair, you can style it with a flat iron or curling iron.
You can now turn all your human hair weaves into wigs. You will get better and faster with practice. Make sure you read up on how to maintain a human hair weave, so you can get the best out of your newly-made wig.
