Everybody loves Lagos (well, almost everybody). It’s a beautiful and exciting city. We also know that living in Lagos tends to get stressful. The high energy and chaos of everyday Lagos life can be demanding.
After a long day, you will need time to relax and recharge in your own cosy place. However, getting an apartment itself can be a hassle. We even wrote an article about the hidden cost of an apartment in Lagos.
When you do get an apartment, it needs to be a safe haven. It is only right that it is perfectly designed to suit your taste.
Here are some design ideas perfect for your Lagos apartment.
One of the challenges with living in a city like Lagos is the congestion. Most apartments are small and functional without much thought to style and design. However, there are several creative ways to avoid cluster and still fully furnish your apartment.
Space is very important. When you’re shopping for furniture, you should visualise your apartment space. You will need to consider how much space you have and plan accordingly. This doesn’t mean your furniture should be boring. If you have a lot of stuff, you will have to find new and exciting ways to create storage space.
Quick tip: Use a drawer or side stools as storage space and to decongest a room.
Don’t be afraid to try out different colours and patterns. You can decide to go bold or opt for a neutral backdrop. If you like bright colours, try playing around with them. One of the quickest ways to add life to an apartment is with colours, patterns and wallpapers. If you can’t repaint your walls, there are other ways to add colour. Feel free to experiment with as many things as possible.
Quick Tip: White walls will make your room appear larger than it is. You can also wrap old Ankara fabric around a frame and hang as wall art. (Don’t worry, we won’t tell anyone you got the idea here)
Inject life into your apartment with art. You live in Lagos, show off your Afrocentric style. One of the perks of living in Lagos is that artwork is very easy to buy. You can scout for paintings or sculptures in art galleries, local stores, traffic, and roadsides. For a wide variety of art, you can pay a visit to the arts and crafts market at Lekki or the popular Nike Art Gallery. With a smaller budget, the arts and crafts market is your best choice, but be ready to haggle. Their initial prices will be high, have your bargaining hat on.
Statement pieces are an excellent way to add a “pop” to your apartment. With one or two interesting furniture pieces, you can add style to your apartment. For example, a couch in an interesting colour or shape can make a big difference. Reclining chairs can also be used for a comfy and relaxed vibe. If you would rather have a less relaxed scene, you can opt for a more modern open floor plan. Use Ankara covered sofas or cushions for a cultural feel.
Quick Tip: Short furniture creates more legroom.
Curtains complete a room. Choose curtains that complement your furniture and walls. It is best to avoid heavy fabric curtains, as they tend to make a room feel stuffy. Instead, use translucent curtains that let light in. If you don’t want sunlight getting in, you can use slightly heavy curtains. You can also opt for patterned curtains. They tend to keep excess light out. To accentuate a tall ceiling, mount the drapes about a foot above the window and doors. You can get good quality curtains from Tejuosho market on the mainland, or Tinubu market in Lagos Island. The great thing is, you can pick out your curtain fabric and get your curtains sewn within 30 minutes for as low as 500 Naira per curtain.
Every space or home has some tight corners that don’t really do anything. For some reason, it is usually hard to fit anything into these corners. That’s why we call them dead zones. If you are a workaholic (like most Lagosians are), you can fit a small table or a shelf to fit into this corner. If a regular table or shelf cannot fit, you can get one custom made. Instead of a table or shelf, you can also place a potted plant in that corner. Depending on the size of the space, the possibilities are endless. Remember to be creative and think outside the box.
Quick tip: Use laundry bags as a storage space when you have extra space under a table.
If you don’t have a large budget, try to get some things done yourself. Check the local market and make use of local artisans, tailors, carpenters, etc. Remember to stick to your personal style and preferences. You don’t want to design an apartment you’re not comfortable in. If you will spend a lot of time in your apartment, prioritise functionality and comfort.
If all these seem like too much trouble, get interior decorators on VConnect to get it done.
